Stories of Our
Northbound Journey

From Punjab to Canada: A Century of Courage

This is not a simple recounting of events. It is about the human beings who migrated across continents, who encountered enmity, who buried their loved ones, who stayed, who fought, and who built. It is about the Sikh community's struggle in Canada, doing so every single moment for over a century.

"We did not ask to be extraordinary. We only asked to be remembered."

— The Sikh Canadian Experience

Reflection: Part 5 of the Project

"What can Canadian Sikh communities' struggles and strength teach us today?"

While most stories of discrimination are of course important, what is most important to us is the discrimination and the resilience that followed. People who were not granted the right to vote, who still registered to risk their lives for the country that had denied them the right to vote.

Resilience is when a system says you do not deserve dignity and you insist on your dignity. It is building a gurdwara in a town where you are not fully welcome, because your community needs somewhere to belong.

The Canada that we are proud of today is the Canada that had people who had every reason to give up. People who advocated, marched, and in some cases, lost their lives. That is worth knowing. That is worth remembering.
